World Cup ‘masterplan’ support

LITIS Stadium in Mt Hawthorn could be used as a training ground for soccer teams competing in the World Cup in 2022 if Australia is successful in its bid to host the tournament.

Last week the Town of Vincent backed a Masterplan for the facility and the adjoining ground, Britannia Reserve. The Masterplan, which has been given “in principle” support by the council, envisages extensive earthworks to level the site to the same level as the adjoining Britannia Road and a new headquarters for Football West administration.

Further works will involve a new artificial playing pitch, lighting upgrades and CCTV installation, which could provide training facilities for World Cup squads in 2022.

Football West chief executive Peter Hugg said he would liaise with the affected stakeholders to discuss the next steps, particularly in regards to funding and government financial support for the plan.

“Members can rest assured that the Board of Football West will act in the best interests of the sport,” Mr Hugg said.

He reiterated the plans were only a “concept” and it depended on Football West raising the necessary levels of funding from all sources.

An announcement, on which nation will host the 2022 World Cup, will be made by FIFA on December 2 .
