WACA cans idea of ban on alcohol advertising

Comments:

THE WA Cricket Association (WACA) has poured cold water on a ban on alcohol advertising at the ground.

This is despite the fact that its East Perth neighbour, Gloucester Park, has announced it will no longer be advertising alcoholic beverages at the facility.

A WACA spokesman told the Guardian Express last week: “We are not going to be buying into this issue any further.”

But the Australian Medical Association of WA (AMA WA) says other sporting venues in WA should follow Gloucester Park’s lead and ban alcohol advertising.

AMA WA president Dave Mountain said Gloucester Park was setting the pace for other organisations who have “allowed themselves to become puppets of the liquor industry.”

“Unfortunately alcohol promotion and excessive drinking have become almost a tradition at the WACA during big international games and this summer promises to be no different,” Prof Mountain said.

“Administrators have to start realising that their sport is not going to collapse if they reject alcohol sponsorship.”

The Town of Vincent has already indicated it is not considering such a ban at Perth Oval.
