Council approves site plans

STRUCTURE plans for East Landsdale are with the WA Planning Commission after Wanneroo Council endorsed them on Tuesday night.

The plan outlines the uses for the 215-hectare site, including parks, the size of residential lots, commercial land and reserves.

Peter Nosow, who owns land covered by the structure plan, told the council he was satisfied with recent work by the City of Wanneroo to make the distribution of public open space fairer.

Chris Donnelly, representing the landowners with large areas of wetland on their property, told the council that about half their land was taken up with road reserve, public open space and the wetland, which would reduce their profits considerably.

He said these landowners should not bear all the cost for protecting the wetlands and should receive compensation.

“We believe that all land owners should contribute,” he said.

The officers’ report to council said it was not in line with current policy to compensate people in this situation, but councillors would have a chance to consider changes to the policy in August or September.

Cr Alan Blencowe raised the possibility that the land may no longer actually be a wetland because of a drop in the water table.

Cr Maureen Grierson said hopefully a season of heavy rain could restore any wetland, but the matter of compensation could be dealt with at future meetings.

Deputy Mayor Brett Treby said the city should consider compensation from a policy perspective, rather than an individual case.

Stockland, the major land owners of the area, first submitted draft plans in 2007.
