WARWICK resident and Churchlands Senior High School student Jodie Ng is using her position as End Child Slavery Ambassador to campaign against the injustices of young slaves.
Ms Ng was one of 50 young West Australians chosen for the ambassador role and is a part of the advocacy campaign to create awareness about the 8.4 million children living in slavery around the world.
The ambassadors attended a leadership workshop at Curtin University two weeks ago to help them build their professional skills and learn ways to run a successful campaign.
“I definitely think it’s something that is important to create awareness about,” Ms Ng said.
“It’s something that’s not really talked about, and many don’t realise that it’s still a problem.”
The Year 12 student said she signed up 400 students at her school as part of the movement and said her classmates were shocked to learn the extent of child slavery worldwide.
Oaktree Foundation WA director Paul Mason said the aim of the project is to spread information about the problem. “The End Child Slavery campaign will draw this issue out of the shadows.” he said.
“For far too long child slavery hasn’t been considered an issue.”
