Parking pressure to ease in Cockburn

PASSENGERS struggling to find parking at the Cockburn train station could have a slight reprieve from hefty fines for illegal parking when the car park is full with an alternative place to park opening nearby.

Property investment and development director Albert Fontana will be making some privately-owned land at Cockburn Central in Success into a road-based car park.

He said it was about 300 metres from the Public Transport Authority car park and could accommodate up to 150 cars.

It would be a couple of years before commercial properties and high-density housing was built on the site.

Mr Fontana said the car park would help alleviate parking problems at the station, which was full daily.

He said the car park would be available on a monthly basis at about $90, patrons would use the same bay daily and the fee was competitive compared to parking in Perth.

Cockburn MLA Fran Logan, who has been pushing the State Government to put in more parking bays to curb the amount of people getting fines, is pleased with the initiative.

He has been canvassing business owners in the area to help find solutions to reduce parking problems near the station.

“It is the first landowner to come on board and it is a great deal,” Mr Logan said.

If you take a few neighbours you could get them to chip in and carpool or pick people up on the way... might be worth doing a pick up service!

I'm not sure where for $40 a month you get monitored secure parking in Perth!! I pay $150 a month in East Perth and I can tell you there is NO little man watching my car. I think this initiative is fantastic and I congratulate Albert Fontana and Fran Logan for making it happen.
It sure will save a lot

Good luck Hugh Hyland finding a quick car park near Cockburn station near a bus feeder route ! ! ! Have you seen South Street and Leach Highway parking?? Plus any place close or near a bus route is going to be predominantly private land and still if it is commercial, what business will tolerate you parking all day in their customers bays?? Not a very well thought out idea.
You obviously don't work in the CITY and rely on transport and the infrastructure to get you there....

Don't even get me started on DISABLED bays at Cockburn station either.... It's disgusting on how many there or AREN'T..... my mum is in a wheel chair and has been fined 3 times as there are limited bays

While I support private landowners reasonably charging for others to use their land, I feel $90 per month is proportionally excessive. Firstly they cannot validly compare it to parking in Perth as there is the cost of the train to and from the city to be factored in. Secondly, compare this to the locally available private parking where you can get it - free generally, and $2 per day or $40 per month in a secure area with a watchfull attendant during weekdays. Thirdly it would be cheaper and possibly as quick to park near a feeder bus route to/from the station.

As for the hefty fines, Cockburn Council should be more even handed - I don't see illegally parked cars or those blocking other's driveways being booked around any other suburbs.
