AUDIENCES will be taken on a journey through the wonderful and nonsensical world of wonderland when Mandurah Little Theatre stages Alice in Wonderland in the October school holidays.

The story follows Alice as she falls down a rabbit hole into a place full of peculiar creatures and unusual characters.

She wanders through a series of adventures where she meets the pipe-smoking caterpillar (Sean Read), the frantic white rabbit (Gemma Little), the peculiar Duchess (Karen Godfrey) with her sneezing baby and the grinning cheshire cat (Phillip Hutton).

Garry Swindell and Jesse Angus play the Mad Hatter and the March Hare.

Swindell also plays the Mock Turtle with Lewis Scott (Jesus Christ Superstar) as the Griffin.

The adventure reaches a dark conclusion as the Knave of Hearts (Peter Rogers) goes on trial for theft of tarts and Alice must finally face her fears.

Director Nikkita Dixon has put a darker spin on the storyline and targeted an older audience.

“But that doesn’t mean children won’t also enjoy the show, it just steers clear of the pantomime style,’’ she said.

The audience can still expect to be involved in the show as the production is designed to integrate with the seating space.

“I wanted to do something a bit different with the staging, so we’ve used the aisle through the middle of the audience to stage some scene transitions and there will be a few sections performed on a sort of ‘mini stage’ in the centre,’’ Dixon said.

“We’ve really pulled together a great cast and some really magical scenes have been created by our choreographer, Rebecca Boddy.

Alice in Wonderland is at Mandurah Senior College on October 2, 3, 9 and 10.

There are matinees on October 3 and 10.
