A TRULY fantastical production of The Snow Queen is offering something ‘a little different’ to the usual school holiday fare.
Written by traditional storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, the play is described as a battle between good and evil – bright and colourful in its design, but with a dark edge.
It opens on a rooftop rose garden, where a heartless Snow Queen (Diana Oliver) and evil sorcerer (Tate Bennett) are watching and plotting against best friends Kai and Gerda (Chris Barnett and Nikkita Dixon).
When a shard of glass from an enchanted mirror enters Kai’s heart, he is rendered helpless, becoming a cold shell, and is taken by the Snow Queen to her icy palace.
Gerda’s attempts to rescue her friend see her encounter a cast of colourful characters including quirky talking crows, an army of gypsies and a woman with magical cherries.
With singing and high-energy dance routines, The Snow Queen is suitable for an audience of all ages, offering a colourful alternative to standard Disney fairytales.
It will be performed at the Mandurah Senior College Performing Arts Centre on January 14 and 15.
Tickets are available from Mandurah Library (9550 3650).
It will also be performed at The Koorliny Arts Centre amphitheatre on January 21 and 22.
